Mike "Scoats" Scotese, the owner of the Grey Lodge Pub on Frankford Avenue has purchased the Blue Ox Bistro in the Fox Chase section of the city. The plan is to reopen the site as the Hop Angel Brauhaus late this summer.
The building at 7980 Oxford Avenue dates back to 1683 and has been noted for German beer and food for the last century. The previous owners spent a good deal of effort redoing the menu and atmosphere until little of the German heritage remained. Not surprisingly, they struggled mightily.
This new venture will return to the site’s roots with a German themed menu and a tap list heavily dependent on German imports.
I am sure the success of the Brauhaus Schmitz down on South Street has changed many minds about the viability of German-themed restaurants these days. Fresh, creative, unusual and ultimately ethnic food along with a well thought-out beer list can create a lot of excitement in a city that seems to really take to places that put out the effort to be unique.
